In Grahame’s description of the river there are clear echoes of Coleridge’s Kubla Khan, with its inspirational subterranean spring. The reference to Genesis in Graham Robertson’s original frontispiece, And a river went out from Eden, is thus ambiguous. In Lacanian terms it connotes our entry into the Symbolic, which is a move in a fictional direction, from which we establish a tenuous identity.
