In the chaotic life of Robert Sanderson, the . After 1662 he found a home at Farnham Castle with George Morley, bishop of Winchester, to whom he dedicated his Life of George Herbert and his biography of Richard Hooker.

In the chaotic life of Robert Sanderson, the biographer occasionally loses his subject over the course of a digression: I should now return to Boothby Pannel, where we left Dr. Hammond and Dr. Sanderson together, but neither can be found there. For the first was in his Journey to London, and the second seiz'd upon the day after his Friend's departure, and carried Prisoner to Lincoln. I find this manner of digression endlessly amusing. He sometimes visited Charles Cotton in his fishing house on the Dove.

Sir Henry Wotton dying in 1639, Walton undertook his life also; it was finished in 1642 and published in 1651. His life of Hooker was published in 1662, that of George Herbert in 1670. All these subjects were endeared to the biographer by a certain gentleness of disposition and cheerful piety; three of them at least-Donne, Wotton and Herbert-were anglers. Their lives were evidently written with loving pains, in the same leisurely fashion as his Angler, and like it are of value less as exact knowledge than as harmonious and complete pictures of character.

The Life of Mr. GEORGE HERBERT, Prebendary of Salisbury Cathedral.

Izaak Walton (Stafford 1593-1683 Winchester) was a London iron-monger whose friends included Donne, Sir Henry Wotton, and Bishops Sanderson, King, and Morley. Walton published The Compleat Angler (1653, enlarged edition, 1655), and these brief lives of Joh Donne (1640); Sir Henry Wotton (1651); Richard Hooker (1665); George Herbert (1670); and Bishop Sanderson (1678). He was not only a painstaking biographer with a scrupulous regard for fact, but also a natural and original stylist in the great age of English prose.
