This is a wonderful 'Figaro' as one might expect. And thank God they used [correctly] the harpsichord for the secco recits. Other big name recordings use piano and it covers up the text and is not able to do those quick cadences in a pace that works. The cast is mostly fantastic -- some a bit not in their prime but score knowledge takes precedence for me. Maestro Barenboim has wonderful pacing .. not as fast as some in a couple of duets but I have grown to love it. The Act II finale is reason enough to own this -- but the beginning of Act III -- the coy [Suzanna] duet between the Count and Suzanna -- the whole yes - no -yes dialogue, is another. The famous pinnacle in all of opera Act II finale is the long version of the proof --but this duet shows again in just 5 minutes the genius of da Ponte's libretto -- and their collaboration. It also shows that Mozart wrote this opera while still young and full of testosterone. He was personally immersed in the game and feelings of being in love, as well as the drama and price of committed love in marriage. All of his works are dripping with human emotions and if there is one silver lining to his terribly untimely death -- it is that he never got old enough to lose passion in his music. That charming duet is proof. To be honest, when things in my own life seem unbearable -- a friend or family member with a horrible diagnosis -- I for back to Figaro. Without a word of religion in it 'The Marriage of Figaro' manages to connect me to the Divine -- and to a perspective on life that is full of hope and happiness. Go figure. Can there be any other explanation of the inspiration behind the music of Mozart? In the car I now listen to nothing else. I highly recommend this inexpensive recording. It will complete even the most cynical person's classical education. It is perfection. PS Be sure to read the notes. Can you believe Lorenzo da Ponte is buried in Manhattan? Who knew? Bravo to all who did this series!

EMI has issued a number of vital opera performances with attractive packaging including a deeper than usual introduction to an opera, its plot, characters, and reception. In this case, the booklet material is pretty good. The recorded performance, though, is something of a disappointment. Whole swaths of recitative have been pruned away so that the plot makes little sense unless you already know the opera. And the vocal casting is a little less than ideal, with Geraint Jones a somewhat over-aged, boomy Figaro and Fischer-Dieskau at his barkiest as the Count. I'd opt for a better performance (perhaps the Erich Kleiber/Vienna State Opera on Decca) and a better introductory book.

We enjoyed this. Not the best dynamics for some but we enjoy opera.

It claims to feature "the complete opera on two CD's," but not quite. The recitatives, though included in the libretto, are missing from the recording--a very different experience from what Mozart and Da Ponte intended.
