Berendt's father Ernst Berendt was a Protestant pastor belonging to the Confessing Church and was imprisoned and died in the Dachau concentration camp. Joachim-Ernst Berendt, a German writer who was best known as a jazz critic but who was also a radio and concert producer and the author of books on nature and acoustical phenomena, died Feb. 4 in Hamburg, Germany. The Independent Publishers Group, his American distributor, said the book sold almost two million copies worldwide. Among histories of the genre, ''The Jazz Book'' is perhaps the most encyclopedic; its focus is on aesthetic lineage.

Joachim-Ernst Berendt was a German music journalist. Berendt was known by jazz fans as an astute critic, who wrote several books on this American art form and helped produce more than two hundred and fifty musical recordings. In addition, he authored books on nature and acoustical phenomena. It was at that time, that he developed his interest in jazz. After an injury cut his military career short, Berendt helped to found the Sudwestfunk (SWF) radio and television network in Baden-Baden in 1945. Beginning in 1950 until his retirement in 1987, Joachim-Ernst Berendt headed the jazz department of the SWF.
