I am a huge long- time fan of Bjork, and I wanted to learn more about her. I bought two books, this was much the best. The writer has interviewed, it seems, practically everyone associated with her--ex-boyfriends, musical collaborators, friends, collaborators, relatives.... As far as I could see, he didn't interview Bjork herself but quotes extensively from her conversations with others. The chapters are chronological; the book goes up to Vespertine. Very interesting, very moving to read about some of what she as going through in her emotional relationships at the time she was creating the songs. I found the tone of the author in telling these stories to be appropriate: warm, compassionate, felt very true. Does give me an even greater appreciation for her, which I had hardly imagined possible! At the end of the book there is a brief commentary on almost every song up to Vespertine, with information about how and why it came about. When she was recording at a secluded studio in the Islands, she got a very long cord and would go out onto the beach at night, run and play in the ocean while recording; she found a sea cave, went in to it to record--I think it was Cover Me--you can hear that in her voice. lots of great info like that.
It's not principally a picture book, although there are some good pics.

I've been eating away at this book for about four weeks now, only reading when I was feeling suitably tranquil and ready to absorb. This has proved to be the perfect condition in which to enjoy Wow & Flutter, as what I have to reflect on now is a month of pure joy.

I've been a Björk fan for very little time at all, relatively. But darn it all if this gorgeously rhythmic book hasn't secured her as a permanent and crucial part of my everyday existence. So much so, that I am entirely at odds as to what to read now that I am finished. Wow & Flutter has been a breath of fresh air, a few quiet hours in the evening that I wouldn't exchange for anything in the world.

Steeped in little secrets and blissfully poignant anecdotes, this (and don't let anyone tell you different), THIS is the companion to take with you as you delve ever deeper into the world of Björk. Complete with tastefully chosen photographs, illuminating input from friends, family, and Björk herself, there is little left to be desired.

I can think of no better writer to have tackled this tremendous undertaking than Mark Pytlik, who I can now count among my most admired wordsmiths and a treasured part of my bookshelf. The narrative is welcoming and thoughtful, the pacing refreshingly up-tempo, the stories critical and relevant, and all from a fluidly personal perspective that feels as if we are really by Björk's side as she discovers the world.

As for the writer's personal sentiments, Mark's words reflect his delight and utter fascination without ever crossing into heavy-handedness or bias, while he handles all the materiel with a genuine respect and the appropriate disbelief.

Whether you've been into Björk's music since it bubbled into being way back when, or merely for the length of a song, this book will be an invigorating adventure.

Oh, and there's about fifty pages of appendices at the back, detailing the genesis, context, and production of every song Björk officially released up until Wow & Flutter's publication. You can ask for no more than that.

I like the diversity of subjects this book covers -- her evolution, music, personal journey, sociology. I learned a lot about where she came from, her driving forces, and other things that were inspirational. Björk is a very inspirational person and musician, and any fan will definitely enjoy this book. Mark Pytlik researched his topic with excellence, and he is a great writer. I'd love to read a sequel Mark.
