This book is one of those that, if you happened to pick it up in a bookstore, very likely you would not put it down till having turned every page (as was in my case). The book is full of pictures, from black-and-white photos of the streets and cabarets of Montmartre, Moulin Rouge and Sacre-Coeur during different periods of time, and the artists in their studios (and Toulouse-Lautrec painting portrait on the street), to richly colored paintings by Renoir, Utrillo, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Modigliani, and many, many more. The end of the book shows detailed maps of the streets of Montmartre and the exact addresses where each of the many (now) famous artists once lived. This book will be enjoyed not only by those interested in art history, but by just anyone with a sense of history. Highly recommended are both this book and its sequel, "Paris-Montparnasse : The Heyday of Modern Art, 1910-1940".
