Roy Lichtenstein was born and raised in New York City on October 27. .One of the finest works by Lichtenstein was his sculpture that he called "Brushstrokes in Flight".

Roy Lichtenstein was born and raised in New York City on October 27, 1923. His parents were Milton and Beatrice Werner Lichtenstein. This masterpiece utilized a comic book panel, which was greatly inspired by the All American Men of War from DC Comics' 1962 issue. Among his other works included his ads for household and food items that featured Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. This famous masterpiece measured 25 feet in height, and it was completed as among the artist's significant large scale commission.

THE first of Roy Lichtenstein's comic-book paintings were produced to please his children. At least the story offered a clue to a vast American middle-class audience eager to understand the new pop art so as to discuss it in a seemingly informed and sympathetic way. Unlike the abstract impressionists who had preceded pop art, it was clear that Mr Lichtenstein could draw. Not for him the abstractionists' random brush-strokes and drips; he had a meticulous line and a careful use of colour.

Blondes, beds and black-and-white works sum up this selection of Roy Lichtenstein's series, based on an exhibition mounted at Vienna's famous Kunsthaus Bregenz in 2005. This substantial catalogue contains 80 essential color reproductions, some in high-quality foldouts, under three thematic groupings: early black-and-white works of the 1960s; the woman as motif in his paintings from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s; and his interiors, especially those from the 1990s. Leading scholars in the field, including Michael Lobel and Avis Berman, newly illuminate the Pop master's oeuvre in the context of this juxtaposition of early and late periods. Also included are studio photographs, some of which have never been published before, and finally, a biography and bibliography related specifically to the exhibition themes.

Being a fan of the Modern Masters series, I was a little disappointed with this book, not because of its text, which is full of information and insightul remarks written by a leading art historian, but because of the illustrations, most of which are in black and white. Lichtenstein's works gain a lot at being well reproduced and, in this case, this is a major flaw. Apart from that, the entire career of the artist is studied and most of his major works, especially the paintings from the 1960's, are illustrated.

Love all the' Getting to Know the Worl's Greatest Artists," books. I have purchased several of the books in the series and have found them full of fun facts, illustrations and examples of the artist's work that I will use in my middle school classroom and recommend this and the other books in the series!

One of the subjects I teach is K - 4 Fine Arts. I have found this whole series of books to be a great review for me in my preparation and planning, as well as a user friendly resource for the children.

This book is the catalogue for an exhibition held at the Kunsthaus Bregenz in 2006. It studies Lichtenstein's work chronologically and dividing it by themes (women, interiors, early paintings...). The reproductions are very good and even show the paintings in their current frame (an unusual step which I think gives an extra dimension to the works). A very interesting book, easy to read, on an artist that changed the way we look at art.
