On the occasion of its sixtieth anniversary, Assouline presents the authoritative volume on the bikini with iconic images from its history, a study of its symbolism, and a look at the most defining fashions.A sexy alternative to the one-piece swimming costume, the bikini forever changed the way women relate to their bodies. Smaller than the world s smallest bathing suit, as it was first described by its creator Frenchman Louis Reard, the bikini has become a symbol of female sensuality and liberation. Here is a four hundred page tribute to the Hollywood pin-ups of the 50s; Bond girls Ursula Andress and Halle Berry rising up from the sea; the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, birthplace of the tanga; Brigitte Bardot, topless and poolside in St. Tropez; the itsy bitsy teeny weeny styles of the 60s; beach bodies on spring break; the monokini, tankini, bandini, and v-kini; the strappy and the sporty; the sexy and the outrageous. But whether iconic or ordinary, scandalous or social, every image of the bikini in this luscious volume is about beauty.

Great book, solidly stands by the other books in this series. I own many fashion/coffee-table books and The Bikini Book is a fun, sexy addition to my collection. I read the reviews before I bought my copy and it is clear that any negative reviews are from strange people who take the RHONY way too seriously. The Trench Book is, by far, my favorite in this series, but I still think The Bikini Book is a great little book that has tons of beautiful pictures that are inspiring, interesting and entertaining. A picture is worth a thousand words, and honestly, has there ever been an object more visually stimulating than a bikini? Is the book light on words, yes, as it should be. All of the books in this series are picture heavy and writing light. If you are into fashion, buy this book, you won't be disappointed. Also buy The Trench Book, The T-Shirt Book and The Leather Book. I would LOVE to see Assouline keep adding titles to this series, like perhaps The Denim Book, The Shoe Book, The Sneaker Book, etc.

a great insight

Great little, although heavy, reference of the bikini through the years. Knew very little of the history of this garment until now - so I gained some knowledge & perspective from text & pictures.

This book takes us through social history with the help of the provocative bikini. bensimon"s text and clever photograph choices not only convey a strong respect for the garment, but also her ability to synthesize information and make it fun and always charming is a gift

"Written" (yeah right) by a woman who might be the most ignorant specimen of humanity on the face of the planet. Must be nice to cash in on your husband's name when you have ZERO talent of your own!

You should only buy this book if your only other choice is flushing it down the toilet. (Seriously!).

Only gave one star cuz the option for 0 stars wasn’t possible..

I do not understand how this woman got this book published in the first place, but I assume it is her connections with the rich and famous. Her "writing" is just as garbled and nonsense, just as she speaks on the Real Housewives of New York. I am glad that in this case, lots of pictures helped to take your mind off of the "writing". Kelly, you should really take a lot of course in English and English literature. You are really embarrassing yourself. I must admit that I was not surprised, having seen her mixed up insanity on the show, and am glad that I checked it out from the library, and did not waste anything other than my time. DON'T BOTHER!!!
Get the Countess de Lessups book on ettiquite.
It is wonderful! Im going to buy a bunch for all my friends to enjoy.

So this bikini book is horrific and so bland.
