interdisciplinary breadth and moderate technical depth. com User, September 28, 2007. This is a great book, and it's a shame it's out of print. It shows it's age a bit (1982), but Vic keeps it pretty timeless by focusing mainly on those concepts which are forever-relevant. The book covers Nordic skiing, and some Alpine touring, and also winter mountaineering.

Inspired by Vic Bein’s book in the mid 80s and then of course Paul Parker’s original Freel Heel Skiing book a few year’s later I would skin or hike up the hills in some quite appalling arctic weather just for the possibility of a dozen decent turns!

Alternative Title: mountain climbing. Mountaineering, also called mountain climbing, the sport of attaining, or attempting to attain, high points in mountainous regions, mainly for the pleasure of the climb. Although the term is often loosely applied to walking up low mountains that offer only moderate difficulties, it is more properly restricted to climbing in localities where the terrain and weather conditions present such hazards that, for safety, a certain amount of previous experience will be found necessary.
