This book was enormously helpful during an 11 day vacation in the Upper Peninsula during late September, which was my first trip to the Upper Peninsula. After the first couple hikes I started tearing out the pages for a hike, folding them, and putting them in an easily accessible pocket. The book is a little dated and I found a few details inaccurate. I supplemented this book with National Forest Service maps for Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests and Delorme’s Michigan Atlas & Gazetteer, which is also available from Amazon. Wherever possible try to also supplement this book with local larger trail maps or ones printed from online. And remember this book does not—nor does it claim to—include all the trails in the Upper Peninsula.

Before my Upper Peninsula hiking trip with my girlfriend and our dog, I purchased this quide to acquaint myself with some good hiking trails in the UP. While I used this guide to identify several routes (Chapel Loop is a must-see), the book tended to have many very short hikes of less than two miles. Additionally, there were some other fantastic hikes that we only learned about after talking to locals - like climbing the bluffs overlooking Bete Gris bay. Overall though, this was a solid purchase for the price, and helped us find some decent trails for our week-long trip.

This is a terrific guide for Michigan U.P hikes. It provides detailed descriptions of each trail, and let's the reader know exactly how far each is. Also includes the "difficulty" level of each. Maps are included to show you exactly how to get to each trail. Entire U.P. is covered, from just over the bridge to near Wisconsin. What a great resource!

I used Eric's book Memorial Day weekend 2007 to plan a series of day hikes in the U.P. The hikes he chose to highlight are indeed spectacular. The trail descriptions are helpful and accurate, to the point where I took one of the Norwich Bluff alternative routes and found the suggested, little traveled side trail with no problems. I also used this book for some route planning in the Porkies a year or so ago. Thanks for the great guide!

This book is exactly what I needed - 50 hikes in the Upper Peninsula, each with clear directions to the trailhead, suggestions for nearby camping, and an accurate description of the route and sights. It's by no means comprehensive, and those familiar with the UP will surely have favorite hikes that aren't represented here. But as a starting point for someone spending a few weeks in the area, it's a great travel companion. Anywhere you're likely to spend time as a tourist, you'll find at least two or three hikes within a short drive, so you can get out there and get your feet on the ground.

Wish shorter hikes were included here... The average hikes in this book are 8-10 miles. Also I wish the author would warn about the black flies... Those suckers were brutal!

Great details on hking in the UP, broken down by region with a nice map showing the location of all the parks. Nice key at the start of each write up.
