The Jesus Prayer has been with us since the earliest years of Christianity

The Jesus Prayer has been with us since the earliest years of Christianity. With its many variations, from "Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" to the single word "Jesus" it has been a fount of prayer and a way of being attentive to God for the monks, nuns, clergy and lay people of the Eastern Church for centuries. Today, the Jesus Prayer is practiced all over the world in every Christian tradition. Simple in form, but powerful in its potential to develop and transform the heart, it becomes a way of life for those who practice it.

I was introduced to this little book by a friend who read some excerpts. I bought more than one copy so I could give it to friends who also need to re-charge their prayer life,

Irma Zaleski introduces us to the Jesus prayer in short chapters written in an easily understandable style. Although the prayer itself is short and easily memorized, she talks about the prayer as a means of 'keeping in touch' with Jesus throughout the day. It can be used as a mantra at the beginning of a meditation, it can be said anywhere and at any time, it can be shortened to only Jesus' name. She talks about the history and efficacy of this prayer as well as the distractions and boredom of simple repetition. She answers the inherent question: why bother to pray the Jesus prayer?

I recommend this little booklet highly for those who are finding their prayer life blah and boring; who are finding that they are neglecting their prayer life; or, for those who simply need a 'jump start' in their prayer life. It is a good book to add to a prayer library and to have easily accessible for re-reading.

The Jesus Prayer as a way toward, and a summary of, a life-giving relationship with God. A profound and beautiful work.

`Lord Jesus Christ have mercy upon me a sinner' is a very old prayer. It has been used in both the east and the west as a way to practice unceasing prayer. Zaleski helps up to approach this in a realistic and hopeful way. There is not the expectation that tomorrow you will be able to pray continuously without fail, but this book will help us to grow in the desire to pray and practice this form of worship.

This slim volume is an excellent introduction to the Jesus Prayer for those in the Western Christian tradition. It is practical and down-to-earth, bypassing the Eastern theology and mysticism often embedded in introductions to the prayer.
This book includes a short history of the prayer, instructions for its use including the setting of realistic expectations, guidance on the difficulties that may arise ...
Why only three stars? This is a solid, useful book written in straightfoward language but it contains nothing to set it apart from similar books.

This booklet contains a series of two dozen short meditations revolving around the Jesus Prayer, its origins, and its spiritual benefits. Given that these two dozen meditations cover barely over five dozen pages, do not expect a greeat deal of detail to these meditations. That is not to say that it is a bad book. It is a good book. Just don't expect to be something that it isn't. The best use of this book would be to read a chapter as a short meditation before practicing the prayer.
