One of the major arenas of debate in Aegean prehistory for the last 25 years has been state-formation and the emergence of civilization. Inevitably, the process of urbanization has been one of the topics around which there has been much discussion. In contrast the nature and character of Bronze Age towns has been largely ignored, particularly at a generalized level. Papers on prehistoric Aegean towns have usually focussed on their architecture and particularly their elite or public architecture and are often restricted to a single town or even a single building.
